Scripture

2 Kings 6:16-17

16 He answered, “Don’t be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 Elisha prayed, and said, “LORD, please open his eyes, that he may see.” The LORD opened the young man’s eyes, and he saw; and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire around Elisha.

2 Kings 6:16-17, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)

Lyrics

Cold Open
Open up my eyes to see the sight!
Upon the hills a thousand armies burning bright!
When the night surrounds me on the battleground
The roar of heaven is the only sound!

Verse 1
Surrounded by the shadows in the night
You split the darkness with Your holy light
Every fear is falling at Your spoken word
The mighty anthem of the King is heard!

Pre
Those who are with us outnumber all our fear!
Those who are with us outnumber all our fear!
The King of heaven's armies marches near!

Breakdown
A wall of fire around the ones You love
Salvation pouring from the throne above!
Open up the heavens, let Your glory fall
You stand victorious above it all!

Euphoric Drop
Chariots of fire upon the hill!
Every raging storm becomes so still!
Blazing in the power of Your holy name!
Heaven comes alive inside the flame!
Victory is ringing through the skies!
On the wings of glory now we rise!

Outro
Chariots of fire upon the hill!
In the power of Your name we rise!

What the passage means

Surrounded by an enemy army at Dothan, Elisha's frightened servant is told that "those who are with us are more than those who are with them", and when Elisha prays, the servant sees the hills full of horses and chariots of fire. The passage is commonly read as a picture of God's unseen protection and of faith that sees beyond what is visible. It is often quoted to encourage courage and trust when a situation looks hopeless.

Track 2

Ancient Gates

Inspired by Psalm 24:7-10 · ISRC QTA872672145 · Song page

Scripture

Psalm 24:3-10

3 Who may ascend to the LORD’s hill? Who may stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart; who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood, and has not sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive a blessing from the LORD, righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 This is the generation of those who seek Him, who seek your face - even Jacob. Selah. 7 Lift up your heads, you gates! Be lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the King of glory will come in. 8 Who is the King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, you gates; yes, lift them up, you everlasting doors, and the King of glory will come in. 10 Who is this King of glory? The LORD of Armies is the King of glory! Selah.

Psalm 24:3-10, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)Credited on the release as Psalm 24:7-10.Widened from the credited 24:7-10 to 24:3-10 because Verse 1 of the lyrics paraphrases vv. 3-4 ("Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord… clean hands and a pure heart").

Lyrics

Verse 1
Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
Who stands forgiven by Your spoken word?
Clean hands and hearts made pure inside Your grace
Longing just to look upon Your face

Breakdown
Lift up your heads, O gates of ancient stone!
Prepare the way before the Savior's throne!
Who is this King of glory marching in?
The Lord Almighty, conqueror of sin!

Euphoric Drop
Swing wide the ancient gates and let Him in!
Let the song of heaven now begin!
Mighty in battle, crowned in majesty
King of glory for eternity!

What the passage means

Psalm 24 asks who may stand in God's holy place and answers: those with clean hands and a pure heart. Its closing call for the ancient gates to lift up their heads so that "the King of glory" may enter is widely thought to have been sung as the ark of the covenant was carried into Jerusalem. Readers have long understood it as a celebration of God as victorious King, and many Christians also read it in connection with Christ's ascension.

Track 3

Crown of Glory

Inspired by Psalm 8:1-9 & Revelation 19:12 · ISRC QTA872672146 · Song page

Scripture

Psalm 8:1-9

1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens! 2 From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained, 4 what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him? 5 For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honour. 6 You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet: 7 All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field, 8 the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas. 9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

Revelation 19:12

12 His eyes are a flame of fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has names written and a name written which no one knows but he himself.

Psalm 8:1-9 & Revelation 19:12, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)

Lyrics

Cold Open
Lord our Lord, how majestic is Your name!
Across the heavens burns Your eternal flame!
Higher than the stars You set Your royal throne!
Forevermore You reign as King alone!

Verse 1
When I look up at the galaxies of light
The moon and stars You fashioned in the night
Who are we that You would call us by Your name
Who are we that You would call us by Your name
And crown our broken lives in holy flame?

Breakdown
Lift up your voices, let the temple ring!
Every tribe and nation bow before the King!
Who is this King in majesty arrayed?
The Living God whose kingdom cannot fade!

Build
Swing wide the heavens, let the glory fall!
The King of kings is reigning over all!

Euphoric Drop
Crowned in glory, shining like the sun!
The battle is the Lord's, the victory is won!
Lift up your heads and let the anthem rise!
His majesty is blazing through the skies!
Holy, holy, mighty to redeem!
Forevermore our everlasting King!

Outro
How majestic is Your name!
Forevermore our everlasting King!

What the passage means

Psalm 8 marvels that the Creator of the moon and stars pays attention to human beings, and has "crowned him with glory and honour" and given people care over creation. It is usually read as a hymn of praise for God's majesty and for the dignity he gives humanity. Revelation 19:12 pictures the returning Christ with "many crowns", so the track pairs the two as a song of God's kingship.

Track 4

Cathedral of Light

Inspired by Psalm 27:1-4 · ISRC QTA872672147 · Song page

Scripture

Psalm 27:1-4

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evildoers came at me to eat up my flesh, even my adversaries and my foes, they stumbled and fell. 3 Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear. Though war should rise against me, even then I will be confident. 4 One thing I have asked of the LORD, that I will seek after: that I may dwell in the LORD’s house all the days of my life, to see the LORD’s beauty, and to enquire in his temple.

Psalm 27:1-4, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)

Lyrics

Intro
Through the shadow of the valley's night
You are the fire on the mountain height

Breakdown
When the waves rise high around my soul
Your gentle whisper makes the broken whole
Whom shall I fear when the light breaks through
My heart is anchored evermore in You

Chorus
Lift my eyes to the cathedral of light
Holy fire burning through the night
Every shadow falling at Your name
Forever rising in Your glorious flame

Outro
In Your house my spirit will remain
Dancing forever in the sacred rain

What the passage means

David declares that "the LORD is my light and my salvation", so he need not fear even when armies gather against him. His one desire is to live in the house of the LORD and to see God's beauty. The psalm is commonly read as an expression of confident trust in God during danger, together with a longing for closeness to him in worship.

Track 5

Wings of the Dawn

Inspired by Psalm 139:9-10 · ISRC QTA872672148 · Song page

Scripture

Psalm 139:1-12

1 LORD, you have searched me, and you know me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, but behold, LORD, you know it altogether. 5 You hem me in behind and before. You laid your hand on me. 6 This knowledge is beyond me. It’s lofty. I can’t attain it. 7 Where could I go from your Spirit? Or where could I flee from your presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, you are there. If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, you are there! 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea, 10 even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me. The light around me will be night,” 12 even the darkness doesn’t hide from you, but the night shines as the day. The darkness is like light to you.

Psalm 139:1-12, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)Credited on the release as Psalm 139:9-10.Widened from the credited 139:9-10 to 139:1-12 because the lyrics also draw on v. 4 ("before a word is on my tongue") and vv. 11-12 (darkness is not dark to God).

Lyrics

Intro
If I take the wings of morning light
Fly beyond the borders of the night

Verse 1
Across the deepest ocean far and wide
Even there Your faithful hand will guide
Before a single word was on my tongue
You knew the melody my heart had sung

Breakdown
No darkness hides me from Your loving eyes
Your mercy meets me where the horizon lies
Take me higher than the morning star
You are where the brightest heavens are

Chorus
On the wings of dawn I fly to You
Every ancient promise burning true
Through the clouds of gold we ascend on high
Written in the brilliance of the sky

Outro
On the wings of dawn we rise
Your hand will guide me home

What the passage means

Psalm 139 reflects on how completely God knows a person, down to every word before it is spoken. It goes on to say that there is nowhere, not even "the wings of the dawn", the far side of the sea or the dark, where God's presence and guiding hand are absent. It is usually read as a comfort, a reassurance that no one is ever beyond God's knowledge and care.

Track 6

Fortress in the Storm

Inspired by Psalm 46:1-10 · ISRC QTA872672149 · Song page

Scripture

Psalm 46:1-10

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah. 4 There is a river, the streams of which make the city of God glad, the holy place of the tents of the Most High. 5 God is within her. She shall not be moved. God will help her at dawn. 6 The nations raged. The kingdoms were moved. He lifted his voice and the earth melted. 7 The LORD of Armies is with us. The God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah. 8 Come, see the LORD’s works, what desolations he has made on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He breaks the bow, and shatters the spear. He burns the chariots in the fire. 10 “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted amongst the nations. I will be exalted on the earth.”

Psalm 46:1-10, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)

Lyrics

Verse 1
There is a river where the waters flow
Bringing peace the world could never know
Above the tempest hear the angels sing
A mighty fortress standing with our King

Breakdown
Be still and know that You alone are Lord
Every raging wave obeys Your word
You turn the deepest shadow into light
Our hiding place across the stormy night

Chorus
You are my refuge when the oceans roar
My solid rock and shield forevermore
No weapon formed can shake the ground I stand
Held inside the hollow of Your hand

Outro
Be still and know that You are King
Forever in Your fortress we will sing

What the passage means

Psalm 46 calls God "our refuge and strength" and says his people need not fear, even if the earth shakes and the mountains fall into the sea, because a river of gladness flows through the city where God dwells. It ends with "Be still, and know that I am God." It is widely read as a song of steady confidence in God's protection amid upheaval, and it inspired Martin Luther's hymn "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God".

Track 7

Still the Waters

Inspired by Mark 4:39 & Psalm 23:2 · ISRC QTA872672150 · Song page

Scripture

Mark 4:37-39

37 A big wind storm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so much that the boat was already filled. 38 He himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and asked him, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are dying?” 39 He awoke and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased and there was a great calm.

Psalm 23:2-3

2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Mark 4:37-39 & Psalm 23:2-3, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)Credited on the release as Mark 4:39 & Psalm 23:2.Widened from the credited Mark 4:39 & Psalm 23:2 to Mark 4:37-39 & Psalm 23:2-3 to give the storm its setting and to complete the "quiet waters / restores my soul" thought.

Lyrics

Intro
Still the waters of my restless mind
Leave the weight of yesterday behind

Verse 1
In the quiet of the morning air
Every breath becomes a whispered prayer
Even when the road is veiled in rain
Mercy falls upon the open plain

Breakdown
Peace be still across the rolling deep
You guard the promises You swore to keep
Lead me beside the quiet streams of grace
Where every shadow fades before Your face

Chorus
Stay with me until the shadows fade
In the peace Your promised hands have made
Every heartbeat anchored in Your light
Guiding me across the longest night

Outro
Anchored in Your holy light
Peace be still across the night

What the passage means

In Mark 4, a violent storm threatens to swamp the disciples' boat while Jesus sleeps; he wakes, says "Peace! Be still!" and the wind and waves fall calm. It is commonly read as showing Jesus' authority over nature and as an invitation to trust him when afraid. Psalm 23's picture of the shepherd leading his sheep beside still waters adds the theme of rest and restoration.

Track 8

Pillars of Cloud and Fire

Inspired by Exodus 13:21-22 · ISRC QTA872672151 · Song page

Scripture

Exodus 13:21-22

21 The LORD went before them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them on their way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, that they might go by day and by night: 22 the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night, didn’t depart from before the people.

Exodus 14:21-22

21 Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 The children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground; and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

Exodus 13:21-22 & Exodus 14:21-22, World English Bible, British Edition (public domain)Credited on the release as Exodus 13:21-22.Added Exodus 14:21-22 (the crossing of the sea on dry ground) because the sung lyrics centre on it.

Lyrics

Verse 1
You part the sea where miracles begin

Breakdown
We walk on dry ground through the parted wave
Singing to the One who came to save
Pillar of fire burn across the night
Lead Your people into endless light

Chorus
Through the parted sea we walk with You
Every promise faithful strong and true
Fire by night and glory in the day
You alone will always make a way

Outro
Fire by night and glory in the day
Forever You will light the way

What the passage means

After leaving Egypt, Israel is led through the wilderness by a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, which never leaves them. At the sea, God makes a way through on dry ground. These passages are usually read as signs of God's constant presence and guidance, and of his rescue of his people when there seems to be no way forward.
